Many ideas are formed when a gap is noticed and felt. And when it came to the concept and creation of Caringbah’s latest yoga and pilates studio, Yoga Sports Centre, that was exactly the case.

Now, we know what you’re thinking - there are already lots of studios in the Shire offering yoga or pilates. But the gap that the centre’s founder, Imelda, noticed was not necessarily a lack in one or the other, but rather in a studio that focused equally on both - and then some.

“A lot of studios only focus on Yoga or Pilates, and yes some might try to have both on the timetable but often one will be a minor option compared to the other... There's nothing like what we're offering in terms of range,” explains Imelda, whose yoga journey began way back in 2007 with an invite from a friend to attend a Bikram yoga class.

“I was having to go to one pilates studio to teach and practice, and another yoga studio to teach and practice. And then if I wanted a particular style, I’d have to go somewhere else again. I felt like I had to go to so many studios to get the variety I was after. So I thought, why not have it all in one place?”

While the market is already saturated with reformer pilates studios, Imelda and her partner Paul have instead offered a program where one isn’t treated as a “bolt on”, or an addition to the other.

The classes stem from Bikram heritage, and Bikram (aka hot) yoga is their lead discipline, with a heavy focus on barre, pilates - yes, including reformer in multiple forms - and near-countless other yoga practices. Trust us when we say, the breadth of the classes and the variety in the timetable is nothing short of impressive (and if you don’t believe us, you can take a look here).

“These are the classes that I like to teach and I like to do,” says Imelda. “My passion and desire to offer everything in one place is why we created Yoga Sports Centre.”

The studio itself is the physical manifestation of Imelda’s desire to respect the practice in its various forms, as well as her desire to create a community that focuses on growth, balance and passion. Designed by Watt Architecture, it’s chic, but warm and calm, a boutique space with an “upmarket, homey feel”, says Paul. Instead of heavy equipment, black walls and house music, you’ll find textured curves, open spaces and lots of light.

And finally, the pricing. From casual visits to class packs and four tiers of membership, the options are, again, flexible and varied. There’s something to suit every schedule and cost. There’s even an intro offer, which gives guests access to unlimited classes (!) for a two week period.
