The Shire’s Best Sandwiches

Because nothing quite hits like this lunchtime classic

Sliced bread remains until this day one of humanity's greatest inventions. These Shire-based eateries agree and have been doing the humble sandwich the justice it deserves. From twists on the classic salad sambo to OTT jaffles, we’ve sampled them all. Scroll down for a handful of our must-trys…

More Daily Ritual

These guys get fresh baked goods delivered daily and that includes their still-warm loaves. It’s these very same loaves that are used to create their fresh sandwiches. Keeping things simple, More Daily Ritual’s menu is petite but it packs a punch when it comes to flavour. The Salad Sandwich with yuzu mayo and Chicken Sandwich are must-orders.

182 Burraneer Bay Road, Burraneer

Hendrix

Hendrix Coffee Co. focuses on two main staples: a quality morning brew and top-notch toasties. Naturally, they excel at both and it’s a match made in heaven. They update their menu regularly but you can expect toasties featuring the likes of ham, tuna, chicken, mortadella and slow-cooked Cuban pork.

1/150 Cronulla Street, Cronulla

Westend Espresso

Westend are the quiet achievers of The Shire, tucked away in their minimalist 38sqm space opposite Jannali station. Their breaky roll is a cult favourite for those in the know. Delightfully chewy bread, boiled egg, ham off the bone, provolone and onion marmalade - it blows our minds every time. You’ll find another six equally delish toasties on their small but mighty menu. Don’t forget to add one of their killer fresh juices and some of the best coffee in The Shire to your order.

Shop 2, 3 Jannali Avenue, Jannali

Loaf

As the name suggests, Loaf is all about carby, bready, sandwichy goodness. They’ve built up a cult-like following  in The Shire and for good reason. You can expect all of the classics - think deluxe salad sambos and chicken shinnty sangas - as well as some very welcome twists - try the Tuna Fish for something different. You won’t find bread this soft elsewhere!

89 Cronulla Street, Cronulla

55/990 Princess Highway, Engadine

Cornerstone

If you ever find yourself cruising around Engadine come lunchtime, you’ll do well to pop by Cornerstone for a bit of fuel. Their sangas are the two-hands kind, packed with extra fun bits like smashed avo. The Schnitzel Sandwich will keep you full well past the 3:00pm slump.

10 Waratah Road, Engadine

Blackwoods

A well-known brunch hotspot, Blackwoods is also home to some very elevated sandwiches. The best part? You can pair your fancy sammy with a glass of the good stuff - a selection of cocktails, wines, beer and bubbles are available. Their sandwiches rotate seasonally, but right now we’re loving the Schnitty Schnitty Bang Bang.

5/22 Surf Lane, Cronulla

Pilgrims

Vegos and vegans keen to have their pick of the menu can pop on down to Pilgrims for their next sandwich fix. They use fresh bread from Cronulla bakery Groundbake with a gluten-free option on hand. Pilgrims vegan cheese is also a total winner - no easy feat!

97 Gerrale Street, Cronulla

HAM

Deli sandwiches are notoriously good and HAM doesn’t disappoint with their Greek-inspired fare. HAM source their sourdough from Infinity Bakery and their fillings from the best local produce available. With seasonality at the core of their philosophy, you’ll have to pop on by to catch what goodies they’re serving up on the sandwich front. Rest assured, anything gracing their display cabinet is bound to be delish.

Shop 3/17 Gerrale Street, Cronulla

Miss Jaffles

If the typical toasted sandwich just isn’t cutting the mustard, pop over to Miss Jaffles for some OTT options. There are both sweet and savoury creations up for grabs. For a throwback, we recommend their Miss Baked (baked beans and cheese) or Miss Shephard (shepards pie mince, peas, carrot, onion, mash potato, cheese, gravy dipping). Fancy going all out? The sweet Miss Biscoff will have you drooling, made with caramilk, biscoff, strawberries and ice cream.

9/20 Gerrale Street, Cronulla
