St George Sailing Club Is Sporting A Brand New Look
A $15 million transformation turns this nearby gem into a must-visit destination
Just a skip, hop and a jump from the shores of the Shire lies a venue worthy of a spot on your must-visit list. After closing its doors to the public - and its 80s fit-out - St George Sailing Club has reopened, and it’s sporting a brand new look.
Following a brand new build worth a whopping $15 million, St George Sailing Club shines with brand new purpose. Its exterior appears to levitate over the waters of Sans Souci, sporting a distinct pitched roofline and pavilion-like design that is clad in fresh white timber panelling and floor-to-ceiling stackable glass doors. A wraparound boardwalk exposes guests to the glorious sunshine and sea breeze afforded by its waterside location, where to one side the Captain Cook Bridge towers, and on the other Kurnell can be glimpsed from afar.
“Our goal was to create a modern facility that pays homage to the historical elements and rustic charm associated with classic boatsheds,” explains Secretary Manager, Matt Hazell.
Comprising an expansive 300-seat indoor/outdoor bistro, sports bar, main bar and function spaces, the Club’s interiors are sheltered by towering ceilings, some of which are domed and framed by ropes in an artful nod to the venue’s true purpose.
The menu is a sophisticated take on seaside classics, using “fresh, locally sourced ingredients,” says Matt: freshly-shucked Australian natural oysters, Tasmanian grilled octopus, seared tuna salad, fish and chips with housemade tartare and seafood platters make an appearance alongside club classics, such as burgers, pizzas and pastas.
The accompanying drinks menu stars wine sourced almost exclusively from Australia and New Zealand, with a few selections from Italy and France making it into the fold. The cocktail list is equally tempting, where favoured classics like Espresso Martinis, Aperol Spritzes and Mojitos sit alongside original creations, including a White Peach and Rosemary Fizz, Bloody Shiraz Gin Spritz and a refreshing Strawberry and Lemongrass Soda.
A treasured local icon that has served the community for 125 years, St George Sailing Club almost certainly heralds a new era of activity and life, and Matt says the response has been nothing but positive.
“As an historic venue with deep roots in the local area, many community members and long-time sailors and supporters have expressed their appreciation for the efforts to modernise and enhance the club while preserving its rich heritage.”
