This Shire-Based Medical Practice Is So Popular, They’ve Just Expanded
If you don’t have a regular GP, tune in now
Hands up if you’ve spent far too much time (more than you’d care to admit) shuttling yourself between doctors? You find one you like and they relocate. You visit another who lacks the bedside manner you need. In short, navigating the world of personal health is no easy feat.
Passed over to Dr Rebekah Hoffman and Dr Annalyse Crane four years ago, Kirrawee Family Medical Practice is an antidote to the problem so many of us face. “It has been hard to find GPs in the Shire lately,” agrees Rebekah, who wants the practice to feel much like any small, local-run business. “Everyone should have a GP - and not just for when you're sick, but even for when you're well. Everyone should be investing in preventative care.”
“I ended up being faced with a really lovely problem; I had too many GPs that wanted to come and work with us. Also, most of our patients were driving all the way over to Kirrawee from Caringbah, Burraneer or Cronulla, simply because they weren't able to get into GPs locally.”
While the Kirrawee practice is 12 rooms, Woolooware is a tighter-knit five, but both offer a full spectrum of care - with, of course, a special focus on women that spans antenatal, shared care, marina, contraception, IUD, medical terminations, menopause, and perimenopause. “We also offer skin cancer assessments and treatments - everything from regular skin checks to having something removed,” shares Rebekah.
Despite their varied and deep level of expertise, the beauty of Rebekah’s team is that they are young - “meaning they can grow with you,” she explains. “In the Shire, 20% of our GPs are over the age of 65, so a large majority will be retiring within the next five years. I really encourage everyone to have a GP at least the same age, if not younger, than them, because you don't want a GP that's going to be retiring just at the time that you need them most.”
With 17 doctors (and counting) working across the two sites, and with patients flooding in, their Kirrawee and Woolooware Practices are ever-growing - and we think it’s safe to assume it’s for good reason. The practice is open from Monday through until Saturday, with early starts and late finishes, making it convenient for just about everyone.
