Have your cake and eat it too
Baked Collective, Caringbah
Pared-back and covered in flowers, dripping in icing, layered to the high heavens, vintage-style, glinting with gold leaf flakes. There are so many ways to do cakes and sweet treats, and they’re all equally pretty - and delicious.
Honestly, we can’t think of many instances where a cake isn’t a fantastic idea. Perhaps you’ve got a wedding in the works, are planning a milestone birthday (90s babies will know), or have a bestie with a baby on the way. Or maybe you’re just an adult and have figured out that you can actually have a cake “just because” whenever you damn well please. Silver linings, right?
Whatever the reason, there are plenty of talented makers and bakers producing some absolutely exquisite cakes and treats for you to try. Read on for our list of some of the best bakers in the Sutherland Shire - tried and tested, we promise.

Picket Fence Cake Design
Picket Fence Cake Design is a favourite in the Shire thanks to owner Kacey’s commitment to create clients’ completely customised dream cakes. From triple-layer, citrus-covered beauties to wedding cakes dotted with edible pearls and just about anything and everything in between, when Kacey says unique, she means it. Honestly, these creations are so stunning, it almost feels a shame to eat them. Almost.
Sweet Flair
Cream puffed to perfection, sponge so light it melts in your mouth, fondant flawlessly piped - Sweet Flair’s Georgia has an eye for detail that shines through in all her creations. Although she’s responsible for many show-stopping designs, most popular are her number and letter styles, which come piled high with petite flowers, edible decorations and swirls of creamy icing - ideal for those aforementioned milestone moments.
Sweet Mayhem
If you’re a sucker for nostalgic recipes with a contemporary flair, Sweet Mayhem is the bakery for you. The team behind this Shire-based cornerstone have totally perfected all the classics: Black Forest, Tiramisu, Victoria Sponge, Carrot, Red Velvet and even Lamington, as well as a number of to-die-for tarts. Holidays and events also bring with them a new slew of designs - think Valentine's Day cookies, Hot Cross Buns and - brace yourself - Yule Log Rocky Road. Baked Patisserie
This boutique patisserie and coffee shop sits in the quiet streets of Kirrawee and is the perfect place to while away a morning while you deliberate over which cake, cookie or tart you’re going to head home with. Larger cakes for occasions are made to order, but span the likes of children’s themed parties, vintage-style, sprinkle-covered, and enveloped in fruit or flowers.

Christophers Cakes
Christopher’s Cake Shop is one of the oldest standing in Australia, first opening its doors and emitting the smells of freshly baked goods in 1955. It’s so popular that there are 10 locations across Sydney, and by some miracle, two of those are right here in the Shire. An incredible selection of cakes (15 to be exact), tarts, filo pastry treats and savoury eats can be found at any Christopher’s store. The hardest part will be choosing just one - you’d be forgiven for over-indulging! Our go-to? The Honeycomb White Choc!
